Lead Risk Assessment in Syracuse and Onondaga County
A lead risk assessment evaluates a property for lead hazards rather than simply detecting paint. A certified risk assessor looks at the condition of painted surfaces, collects dust and sometimes soil samples, and identifies where lead is an active hazard, for example from deteriorating paint, friction surfaces, or settled dust. The result is a report that lists hazards and recommends ways to control them.

What this service is
A lead risk assessment evaluates a property for lead hazards rather than simply detecting paint. A certified risk assessor looks at the condition of painted surfaces, collects dust and sometimes soil samples, and identifies where lead is an active hazard, for example from deteriorating paint, friction surfaces, or settled dust. The result is a report that lists hazards and recommends ways to control them.
A risk assessment is especially useful when a young child lives in an older home, when a child has an elevated blood lead level, or when you are deciding between interim controls and full abatement. Onondaga Lead Services connects you with a New York State certified risk assessor serving Syracuse and Onondaga County.
When a property owner needs this
- A young child lives in or regularly visits an older home.
- A child has been found to have an elevated blood lead level.
- You want to know not just where lead is, but where it is actually a hazard.
- You are choosing between interim controls and abatement and want a prioritized plan.
What to expect from the contractor
- The risk assessor evaluates paint condition and likely exposure points.
- Dust and sometimes soil samples are collected and analyzed by a laboratory.
- You receive a report identifying hazards and recommended controls.
- The contractor explains a prioritized plan to address what was found.
The cost of a risk assessment depends on the size of the property and the number of samples. The certified contractor we send your request to provides a free, no-obligation quote before any work.

- What does lead work cost in Onondaga County?
- No price is published on this site yet, and that is a deliberate hold rather than an oversight. Lead work is quoted per property, and this site does not publish a figure until it has been confirmed with local providers rather than borrowed from a national average. What you are buying decides most of it. A visual risk assessment, an XRF survey that reads every painted surface, and laboratory chip or dust-wipe sampling are three different jobs at three different prices, and abatement is a different order of magnitude again from any of them. Age and size of the property, how many surfaces are deteriorated, and whether a tenant or a young child is involved all move it. The EPA-certified inspector or risk assessor we send your request to prices it after seeing the property, and the quote is free. Onondaga County and New York run lead programs that may cover part of the work for eligible owners. The agencies set the terms and change them, so this site links them rather than printing amounts. The inspection cost guide explains what each service actually covers, so a quote makes sense when you have one.
- How fast will someone get back to me?
- Calls and form submissions reach Compass Camper LLC directly. We read the request and pass it to an independent EPA-certified lead professional serving Onondaga County, usually within about an hour during the day. That professional then contacts you to look at the property and quote the work on their own schedule.
- What work is covered?
- Lead paint inspection, lead paint testing, lead risk assessment, lead-safe renovation under the RRP rule, lead abatement, and rental property lead compliance. See every service.
Only the EPA-certified professional we send your request to can price your actual property. Compass Camper LLC does not perform lead inspection or abatement work and does not quote it.
Frequently asked questions
How is a risk assessment different from an inspection?
An inspection tells you where lead-based paint is present. A risk assessment tells you where lead is currently a hazard and what to do about it. If you want a prioritized plan for an occupied home, a risk assessment is often the better fit. The contractor can advise on which you need.
My child had an elevated blood lead level. What should I do?
That is a health matter first. Follow up with your child’s physician and the Onondaga County Health Department lead program, which conducts environmental investigations when a child has an elevated level. A risk assessment can help identify hazards in the home. We are a marketing service and do not provide medical advice.
What blood lead level is considered elevated?
The CDC uses a blood lead reference value, currently 3.5 micrograms per deciliter, as a screening tool to identify children with higher levels than most. New York State acts on confirmed levels at or above 5 micrograms per deciliter in young children. These are not "safe" thresholds; any exposure is best avoided. Talk to a physician about your child.
Who performs risk assessments in New York?
Risk assessments are performed by certified risk assessors. We connect you with a contractor who holds the appropriate New York State and EPA credentials. Onondaga Lead Services does not perform assessments and is not a certified risk assessor.
